The Bold Scoop #12 :: August 1-7

Sunday, July 31, 2016

You might recall that our favorite love-to-hate reality dramedy The Hills turned 10 back on May 31. The show that propelled the sweet LC into the spotlight and gave us the most hated TV couple ever (that's Speidi for those of you whose memory isn't the best) is celebrating the big anniversary with a TV special titled The Hills: That Was Then, This is Now. Lauren Conrad will make an appearance to address some of the show’s best-kept secrets and talk us through her transformation from a reality-star to a successful business woman. Even if you weren't a fan of the show, we're sure you'll enjoy the behind the scenes nature of the special and finding out what was fake and what was real.

You know that a lot of the relationships were fake on The Hills... Kristen never dated Justin Bobby. You know that their jobs weren't all that real either... did you really think Lauren had to interview for her gig at Teen Vogue? But what you might not have heard is that the cast weren't allowed to repeat a single outfit during the filming of the show, and in fact had to purchase all their own clothes. Crazy no? That would explain the constant shopping... keep reading for our top 3 fashion "moments" from The Hills.
#1 Lauren was the original Queen Bee... she wore a headband practically in every early episode of the show.
#2 Whitney had the ultimate style moment when she stumbled on live TV in a stunning navy Guy Laroche dress (yes, the one that Hilary Swank wore to the Oscars).
#3 Heidi made wedding dress history when she accessorized hers with layers of cascading jewelry.

The MTV special The Hills: That Was Then, This is Now will air on August 2 at 9 pm EST on MTV. Check out the promo here.

Lauren might have been the original star but you have to agree that Kristin stole the show in the end thanks to her ability to make drama out of anything and everything. Hats off to ya! Relive some of her best moments from the final season here.

Are you obsessed with watching fashion and beauty videos on YouTube? Do you document every second of every day on Instagram? If so, it might be time to take the next step and become a real-life content creator. Not sure how? BlogHer is the answer. It's the world's largest conference series for female online content creators, and the brands, media and fans who want to connect with them. The next conference in the series, #BlogHer16: Experts Among Us will take place from August 4 to 6 in LA and includes keynotes from the likes of Kim Kardashian, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Mayim Bialik as well as a ton of teaching sessions that will make you smarter and inspire you to "level up" as soon as you get home.

In case you've missed this little bit of scoop (get it... Scoop 😍😂), Kim Kardashian West is no longer the most followed celebrity on Instagram... and neither is her recent feuding partner Taylor Swift. As it stands, the new official Queen of Instagram is non other than Taylor's bestie Selena Gomez who has racked up more than 92 million followers. Surprised? So were we until we did a little research.
Turns out the success of Ms. Gomez is down to a handful of simple reasons... Firstly, the songstress posts rather rarely (when compared to someone like Kim K) which makes her every post more newsworthy. Secondly, her fans are highly engaged and whether that's thanks to her singing, acting or relationship antics is unclear but the important thing is that her posts gain a ton of comments and likes consistently. Thirdly, she was in a highly publicized romance with Justin Beiber and gained follows from Beliebers and haters alike. And finally, her posts are somewhat more relatable than the average celebrity's... check out for yourself.

We gave you a bit of a warm up last week but now it's time for the real deal... August 5 is finally here and with it the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics. As is tradition, the event will include welcoming speeches, hoisting of the flags, the parade of athletes, the lighting of the cauldron... AND because it's Rio - Gisele. The ceremony which is directed by the Brazilian film director Fernando Meirelles (City of God) is supposed to emphasize "originality" over "luxury" and will eschew "high-tech" ideas such as moving stages and drones for over 6000 dancing volunteers (perhaps in skimpy clothing?!).

NBC, the US broadcaster of the Olympic Games, made a request to the International Olympic Committee for the Parade of Nations to be conducted in English alphabetical order rather than Portuguese, stating that it would affect viewership if the US team, referred to as "Estados Unidos" in Portuguese, entered too soon. The IOC denied this change, as it runs contrary to the requirement that countries enter in the alphabetical order of the language of the host country. Only in America... 😂

The opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games will take place on August 5 at 8 pm BRT (7 pm EST / 11 pm UTC). In the US, the ceremony is broadcast with a delay - the coverage will start at 8 pm EST on NBC. In the UK, BBC will show the opening ceremony with live coverage beginning at 11:40 pm GMT.

For those of you who are fashion obsessed... check out some of the most stylish uniforms of the Rio Games - we're liking the uber chic Lacoste designed outfits of the French.

If you missed Coachella and are still suffering from major FOMO (or if just have separation anxiety) then your prayers have been answered... SF's version of the Palm Springs favorite, the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival will take place from August 5 to 7 at the Golden Gate Park. This eco-friendly fest boasts names such as Radiohead, Lionel Ritchie, LCD Soundsystem, Duran Duran, Zedd and Lana Del Rey in their 2016 lineup as well as several comedy acts. Another reason we love this quirky event is because it's largely cashless... the festival wristband serves both as your ticket and your wallet so there's no need to worry about misplacing your bucks. Phew.

Back in the 1800s, the area of the park where the festival takes place was actually referred to as the “Outside Lands” due to its location away from the masses of the city... hence the name of the festival. And don't worry, music is not the only thing that the event takes seriously... nearly 80 food trucks will be present to feed you and more than 120 types of wine from 40 wineries as well as craft beer from local brewers will be served at Wine Lands and Beer Lands.
