The Bold Scoop #9 :: June 27 - July 3

Sunday, June 26, 2016

Despite the gloomy reality of Brexit in the UK the truth is that "the show must go on"... summer is officially here and with it the annual display of whites, tennis whites to be exact. The Wimbledon Championship aka the British Grand Slam, kicks off on June 27. The tournament lasts 2 weeks and wraps up with the Ladies' Singles Final on Saturday, July 9 and the Gentlemen's Final a day later on July 10. Being British, Wimbledon has always been known for its extensive traditions... it's the last major played on grass (since the Australian Open shifted to a hardcourt in 1988) and one where courts are still notably free of sponsor advertising. In addition, the players are required to adhere to an all-white (or an almost all-white) dress-code, a rule that is strictly enforced and that led to Federer being fined back in 2013 for wearing orange soled Nike shoes.
Novak Djokovic remains the favorite for this year's men's title after winning the prize last year and being undefeated at Grand Slams ever since (he won the US Open back in September as well as the Australian Open and the French Open this year). Rafael Nadal is still out with a wrist injury but Roger Federer is making a comeback from his back injury. As far as Serena Williams is concerned, the last few majors have been a struggle for the 21-time champion so it remains to be seen whether she can pick up that elusive 22nd prize that would tie her with Steffi Graf.

Another important Wimbledon tradition is for spectators to have strawberries and cream, a combination that has been served at Wimbledon from the very first tournament back in 1877. In fact, close to 140,000 portions of English strawberries and 7000 liters of dairy cream are served during the event. All of this is washed down with almost 320,000 glasses of Pimms and 29,000 bottles of champagne. A very British affair indeed.

The 2016 Wimbledon Championship runs from June 27 to July 10. BBC will have extensive coverage of the event (whole 153 hours of it) across BBC One and Two while those in the US can follow along on ESPN.
The tournament is popular with celebrities and royals alike so expect cameos from Kate Middleton, Prince William (and possibly the Queen) as well as the likes of Hugh Grant, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kristin Scott-Thomas, David Beckham and Bradley Cooper. Perhaps Tom Hiddleston will also make an appearance this year with T-swift in tow...

Interested in attending? Unfortunately majority of the tickets have already been sold using the ballot system which required you to sign up by December 31, 2015. The good news is that for the first 9 days of the tournie, Ticketmaster will releases a few hundred tickets a day for next day's play. These require some speedy clicking as they sell out almost instantly - check here for deets.

Alternatively, there is The Queue... for all the major courts you'll likely need to camp out overnight at the nearby Wimbledon Park but for the outside courts an early start should be sufficient. To find out more about how the queue works click here.

The traveling fashion circus is coming to Germany... Mercedes Benz sponsored Fashion Week Berlin starts on June 28 and runs until July 1. More than 45 designers will showcase their looks during 4 days of presentations, among them Cushnie et Ochs who are closing the event with a runway show on July 1 at 5:30 pm. The week will also include the finalists' fashion show for the Designer for Tomorrow awards which this year are hosted and judged by Alber Elbaz. The initiative provides a visual platform for creative ability and gives up-and-coming designers a chance to be discovered. The competition has been hosted for the past 8 years and gives the winner an opportunity to show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin the following summer.

Fashion weeks are big business all around the world... in NYC the semiannual shows draw more than 232,000 attendees and have a total economic impact of $887 million. $16 million of revenue is generated for hotels in Milan during their fashion weeks with most hotels reporting occupancy rates of 90-95% during that time. Paris is home to the largest show with Chanel reportedly inviting close to 2,600 guests every season. London on the other hand is most diverse with 71 countries represented among all the visiting press, buyers, bloggers, broadcasters and crew.

We talked about Shark Week in the last edition of The Bold Scoop and if sharks are your thing you'll be excited to hear that the Paley Center for Media is hosting a Shark Week themed exhibit. The Discovery Channel Shark Week VR Experience is an immersive virtual reality offering that transports fans to places and situations they may not otherwise be able to experience. With Discovery's newest, just-launched Shark Week content along with experiences exploring the African bush to surfing with the pros, and much more—there is literally something for everyone.

In recent times, Shark Week has attracted much criticism for airing docufiction to increase viewer numbers an popularity. Among such fictional programs was the highly successful Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives, which aired back in 2013 and became one of the most watched programs in Shark Week history. The mockumentary was based on an ancient shark species which is now long extinct and caused an uproar after it wasn't immediately clear that the feature was in fact science fiction. The program led to a boycott of Discovery and eventually to the channel announcing in early 2015 that it would no longer air fictional documentaries.

You can visit the Discovery Channel Shark Week VR Experience until July 3, Wednesday to Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm. Tickets are free and don't require advance booking.
The Paley Center for Media is located at 465 N. Beverly Drive (at S. Santa Monica Blvd.) in LA.

Beige is another cornerstone shade making up whole looks and cropping up as an accent (this Celine desert inspired combo is particularly breathtaking).
