The Bold Scoop #6 :: June 6-12

Sunday, June 05, 2016

It's that time of the year again when the CFDA recognizes outstanding contributions made to American fashion by individuals from all areas of the industry and related arts. This year's CFDA Fashion Awards will take place on June 6 at The Hammerstein Ballroom and include awards for design excellence in womenswear, menswear, and accessories. Nominations for each award category are submitted by The CFDA Fashion Awards Guild, an invitation only network comprised of top fashion retailers, journalists, stylists, influencers and the 450+ member designers of the CFDA. The 2016 nominees for Womenswear Designer of the Year include Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, Rodarte and The RowJoel McHale will host while Claire Danes, Aleksander Skarsgard and Karlie Kloss are among the presenters. There will also be 2 performances, one by Michael C. Hall in tribute to Bowie and the other by Jennifer Hudson.

The Council of Fashion Designer's of America or the CFDA was founded in 1962 by publicist Eleanor Lambert who helped to elevate American fashion to international respectability and continued to promote it tirelessly until her death at age 100 in 2003. The Empress of Seventh Avenue was the originator of the International Best Dressed List which she controlled until 2002 when she handed it over to the editors of Vanity Fair. She was also the one to introduce the concept of a semiannual fashion week which replaced uncoordinated fashion shows and enabled American and international fashion writers to cover the industry in a condensed period of time.

Back in March there was talk of the Weinstein Company broadcasting the awards show live on TV but those plans have since been reconsidered... perhaps because the estimated cost of the broadcast was too high or because there wasn't going to be enough interest outside the industry. Either way, it seems that stalking CFDA's social feeds will be the only way to see a glimpse of the show this year. You can follow the Council on Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. For a full list of nominees visit

Want to know more about what CFDA does? Watch Amazon's unscripted series The Fashion Fund where 10 up-and-coming designers are tested and judged by the likes of Anna Wintour and Diane von Furstenberg for a chance to win $400,000 and a mentorship. Previous winners include Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler. Well worth a stream.

British Vogue and the Burlington Arcade are hosting an exclusive evening of shopping, style and cocktails on June 8Many famous brands will be offering exclusive craftsmanship demonstrations and gifts with purchases, whilst delicious cocktails from Berry Bros will be served. This will also be your chance to view an exhibition of select illustrated Vogue covers from 1918 to 1950 that are displayed in the arcade to celebrate the magazine’s centenary issue.
The Burlington, which was launched in 1819, is situated between Bond Street and Piccadilly and is one of the world’s oldest and most celebrated shopping arcades. The destination includes stores by the likes of Chanel, Barrie, La Perla, Maison Michel, KWANPEN, Bell & Ross, ERES, Fredric Malle, Roja Parfums, True Grace Bespoke, Killan and Manolo Blahnik.

Lord George Cavendish was driven mad by objects such as oyster shells, old bottles and (on one occasion) a dead cat being thrown into his garden from a troublesome alleyway on the western boundary of his grand mansion, Burlington House. He commissioned the arcade, a narrow row of shops selling luxury goods, to fill the space. Because it was considered unseemly for ladies to carry packages in those days an underground walkway (which still exists) was also built for porters who would pick up the parcels. An upper level was added to the space in 1906, and over time, those rooms were famously let out to high class courtesans.

The 70th annual Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Awards, will be held on June 12 at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League and recognize achievement in live Broadway theatre. This year's show is hosted by James Corden and will have a star studded list of presenters including Barbara Streisand who is back on the Tony stage for the first time in 46 years.
The audience favorite hip hop musical Hamilton has already made history this year with 16 nominations, the most that any Broadway show has ever received. The nominators deemed the pop-culture piece prize-worthy in every category of theatermaking — acting, writing, directing, dance, music and design — and singled out a whopping 7 performers. The winners will be chosen by the 846 Tony voters — a mix of producers, performers and other theater industry professionals — and will be announced at the ceremony.

The Tony Award forms the fourth spoke in the EGOT, that is someone who has won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony award. Only twelve people and two media franchises have had the honor which has been called tantamount to winning the "Grand Slam" of American show business. The acronym EGOT was coined by actor Philip Michael Thomas and the list of winners includes the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg and Liza Minelli.
